The INAUGURAL INTERMARC ECCS SEMINAR
Intermarc ECCS holds hands-on seminars with a focus on the child. The goal is to allow for teachers, administrators, academics, researchers and the wider community to be in a dynamic space for networking and engaging in ongoing discussions across disciplines and institutions, connecting practitioners, academics, researchers, parents and students to collaborate on diverse issues around children.
It can be the starting point of re-conceptualizing our understanding of children and the practices of early childhood education.
The seminars are aimed at all who are interested in early childhood education, the early years and child development – and really, anyone else who is out of the early childhood realm but interested to learn – the more disciplines, the better!
The topics within the upcoming series of seminars include:
Image of the child
Sneak peak: “All children have preparedness, potential, curiosity; they have interest in relationship, in constructing their own learning, and in negotiating with everything the environment brings to them.”
--- (Lella Gandini, 1993)---
How are we, and can WE, respect the child as a competent being in an early childhood educational setting? How do we define the image of the child?

Being creative with (the child’s) space
Sneak peak: “The environment you construct around you and the children reflects this image you have about the child. There’s a difference between the environment that build based on a preconceived image of the child, and the environment that is created based on the child you see in front of you.”
---(Loris Malaguzzi, 1993)---
Being creative with space means being comfortable with the unknown (L. Malaguzzi, 1993). How comfortable are we with this unknown? How does it impact children’s experience, their learning, and their relationships?

Approaches to learning
Sneak peak: If we are to consider that the child has preparedness, potential, and curiosity, how can we ‘free’ the child’s learning from a dictated, imposed curriculum? Learning happens in diverse ways – adults should consider this as the core to support diverse approaches to children’s learning.
How do we deal with the challenges of the unknown vis-à-vis the competent child?

Telling the story of a child’s learning journey
Sneak peak: “It’s important for the teacher who works with young children to understand that s/he knows little about children…” (L. Malaguzzi, 1993).
Observing the child (could) give you great insight into who the child is – but are you really observing the child for who s/he is? When telling the story, what story is being told? Adult’s version of the story or the child’s?
The way we observe children and how we tell their story reflects our image of the child…once again, observing children involves uncertainty and doubt. How do we work within the context of uncertainty to tell the story of the child’s version of their learning journey?
