CREATING CHILDREN'S SPACES TO INSPIRE LEARNING
Innovation occurs when individuals have freedom, freedom in the space they inhabit and freedom in the environment that surrounds them. Only then can new learning occur. Through both free and ordered play the child’s brain explores all the possibilities, acquiring skills and knowledge. Play is a form of communication and helps children transcend different languages and cultures. Even then, the understanding of freedom in the diversified cultural upbringing in Lebanon and the region extends the boundaries of early childhood development as understood and applied globally.
In line with Intermarc philosophy of respecting the rights of the child, the spaces that the child occupies should describe the “100 languages of the child: the IMAGE of the child” (L. Malaguzzi).
Thus the space should focus on:
- A three-dimensional interface between the child and the world of other living things – children, adults, animals, plants, community, family
- Offering diverse experiences: developing relationships and opportunities for experimentation, offering experiences and providing information, all with a view to maximizing the number of connections a child can make with his environment
- The image of the physical space is derived from the sensory richness of its material in addition to the layout and furnishing of the space. This philosophy in itself reflects the image of the child
- An environment that caters for all processes that interact with the whole child
- Creating spaces to allow freedom of movement
- The outdoor space by extending and connecting the indoor space with the outdoor space – making the outside a continuation of the indoor space
